You want to feel creative when you go into the studio. Putting some thought into your home studio like the example above will give you a much nicer space to work from. That’s something you rarely get from a salesperson in a music store who gets paid on commission. To them, whatever you can afford within your budget is good even if it sucks.

For some, furnishing your bedroom studio or home recording space is a never-ending process of gear acquisition and replacement. For others, it’s about future-proofing by investing in the tools, furniture, and equipment you need to make your art for the long haul. Regardless of genre or budget, all music producers should know how to build out their space to be as effective as possible.
MIDI Keyboard
Thunderbolt will allow you to use any interface that has windows drivers. Most firewire and thunderbolt interfaces have lower latency than USB with the exception of some RME USB interfaces. Slate Digital don’t sell their Slate VMS Software separately either. If you buy a used Slate VMS ML-1 microphone, you need to get an iLok transfer from the original owner.

It’s more of a small rack thing than a desktop interface since all of it’s controls are on the front. If you want more inputs but still want a desktop interface, the Zen Tour is worth a look. This is really your only option to get more inputs without using a 19″ rack. It’s not an option for Windows users as it doesn’t have any Windows drivers.
PROFESSIONAL MUSIC
For example, condenser microphones can easily be degraded by smoke and moisture so buying them used is not so straight forward. It can save you money but it an also cause you drama. Buying audio gear is risky and closer to buying a used car than it is to buying a used sofa. There is lots going on under the hood that can go wrong. You’ll be surprised how much of a different lighting can make to the vibe and feel of your studio. That’s why professional studios always have killer lighting.
This would require decoupling the floor, walls and ceilings and even installing a second door. The inner wall is treated with soundproof insulation and there is an airspace in between the inner wall and outer wall. The floating floor is separated from the original floor with vibration sound absorbers and is treated with insulation as well.

Microphones
The price of the keyboard is about the price of the keybed alone. At present, the only MIDI controller with a Fatar TP/9S is the Native Instruments S49 and S61. It’s expensive but it’s higher quality than all the others.
If you’re just making a simple home studio, maybe you don’t need a very powerful computer. All macs run pretty hot actually but if you’re going to be running it for 12 hours a day everyday, the life expectancy is low. The average lifespan of a Macbook is only 4 years for a typical user.
A Secondary Computer Monitor
For a serious recording studio, changing the computer can literally be weeks worth of installing programs, drivers and dealing with activation and license issues. Certain Apogee interfaces also only run on Mac but that’s just their personal preference. After AVID rebranded some of their interfaces and made windows drivers for them, then Apogee released the windows drivers for their products.
Your MIDI controller will be what you use to program software instrument parts, along with a number of other functions like writing automation. A MIDI keyboard may or may not be a big ticket purchase depending on how you plan to make music in your studio. I’ve had MIDI keyboards that made claims to sync automatically with various software programs, and generally found those features to be unreliable and kind of a headache.
So in the beginning, regardless of your budget, I recommend using what you have for now. When starting your first studio from scratch, the computer will be the biggest expenditure by far. Well most people think so at first, but it’s actually way easier than you’d imagine.
They often buy too much stuff that they don’t need and forget about the elements that are important such as soundproofing & acoustics. Higher-end interfaces tend to feature better mic preamps and converters, and those can make a huge difference in the quality of the recordings you produce. That said, don’t trip out if you can’t afford the best of the best, especially if you’re setting up your first home studio.
Depending on the model, audio interfaces can also act as mic or headphone preamps, DI units, digital converters, etc. Most people with a home studio think buying better gear will solve all of their problems. You don’t want to hear it but, if you only need one good mic, preamp, interface and speakers all around the 1k range each plus a DAW and a good compressor and EQ plugin.
At the time of this article Los Angeles is in lockdown due to Covid-19. My professional recording studio, Current Sound, in Hollywood was forced to close and stop in person recording due to Covid-19. Many of my clients want to setup a home studio and send their songs to me to be mixed but don’t know how to do it. Started in the early ’70s by Tom Hidley, Westlake Studios are renowned for their high-quality acoustic treatment and were some of the first ‘standardized’ recording studios in the USA.
Select a space within your home best suited for your recording studio. The room’s size and shape will significantly determine the necessary acoustic treatment and equipment placement. Ideally, choose a room with minimal external noise and limited distractions. One of the best closed-back options for both recording and mixing are Audio-Technica’s ATH-M50x headphones, which are praised and beloved by audio professionals. The AKG K240 is a popular and relatively inexpensive semi-open option, but if bass is a concern, go with the ATH-M50x.
